Everyone has their favorite famous slogans. Yyou know the one that no matter what every time you hear it on the television or the radio you just want to sing along with it. The advertising world works very hard to make sure that they create the perfect slogan for every popular product on the market. Without these jingles and slogans there are so many products that may never have been nearly as successful as they are today.
Would the Oscar Meyer Weiner ever have become a worldwide phenomenon without the accompanying jingle, ” I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Wiener….” , or who can forget the Miller Light beer commercials of the 80’s with their “Taste Great….Less Filling” battles. While the product may or may not be any better than dozens of similar products on the market, the famous slogans that accompany their introduction to the world make us all sit up and take notice.
The slogans are designed to appeal directly to your mind and make you think of a product whenever you are hungry, (Have it your way, Burger King) or thirsty (It’s the real thing, Coca Cola) or need a place to sleep for the night (We’ll leave the light on, Motel 6). While all of these have stood the test of time and for some like Coke who after some 40 years are still going strong, for every one that succeeds there are many that do not make enough of an impression to last.
The most important reason that advertising companies come up with these famous slogans is to help their clients sell products, it does not matter what they are selling it could be cars or shoes as long as the slogan brings the customers in. It takes a very creative mind to come up with just the right jingle and not every advertising executive can do it.
Often depending on the product you have to wonder which part created the success, was the product so good that it sold itself and the slogan just helped or was that captivating slogan what made the product so successful? In order for a slogan to work it must be original, useful, contain specific information about the product and convey a sense of urgency when applicable. After all the most famous slogans make us want to rush out buy whatever product they are talking about. Everyone knows that “Two all beef patties, special sauce…..on a sesame seed bun!” makes everyone want to rush into McDonalds and buy one.
